Facebook Service Down – Impact on Social Media Marketing?
Facebook Service Down – Impact on Social Media Marketing?
Facebook users in United Kingdon, United States of America, Thailand and Mexico found themselves unable to log in due to server problems. In a ironic twist rival microblogging site Twitter was used by users to express their concern.
Matt Hicks, Facebook spokesperson, said that a ’small percentage’ of users were affected. Now this is all well and fine when talking percentages. However, when the baseline figure is 400,000,000 then this becomes a problem. Not only in terms of user experience and a potential (but unlikely) impact on loyalty, but, what about the marketing impacts?
Businesses must be screaming blue murder at the potential lost revenues in ad impressions (especially if targeted) whatabout those that are trying to launch fan pages, groups related to new products, ideas, events and more! Is this something that we expect or build into marketing plans and relationships with channels like Facebook. Afterall Twitter has had more than its fair share of service failures.
Do we as marketing / internet strategies have to explain to our clients that there may be problems at times with providers like Facebook? Are channels like Facebook contract bound to keep a 99.9% uptime or communicate expected downtimes?
